From 15 to 19 March, Valencia celebrates one of Spain’s best known festivals: Las Fallas, undoubtedly one of the most unique and crazy festivals in Spain. Valencia is becoming a carnival of bonfires, fiesta, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire known as Las Fallas, the fires.
The Fallas are enormous models (“ninots”), often 20 feet tall or even more, displayed on every corner all over the city made out of papier mache, wood and wax, and often caricaturing and satirizing Spanish social and political current affairs, a soap star, all kinds of TV, sports and film personalities, who appear in colorful caricature across the city for all to see. The sculptures are burnt on the night of 19 March in a tremendous spectacle of fire “the Cremà night”. Valencia is at that moment like Nero’s Rome, a city in flames!
